Barely making my adjustable threshhold for easier climbs, Haystack became my 47th summit today. It’s a steep, wooded knob with about a 500-foot overall gain to a decent view. And even though it’s close to home, it was entirely new ground for Mitch, Dave and I. Thanks to Bud for the inspiration and know-how to get us up there.
Note that the trail is on private property belonging to a church retreat off Highway 9 south of Sumas. Access requires checking in with the folks there before traipsing off into the woods. The well maintained trail network spans several miles, including a stretch along an old railroad grade above Saar Creek. Old trestles add interest to that part of the walk. Though they are slowly fading into history, they are also hefty. So with enough care, maybe they’ll last a few more decades.
Trail signs with maps are posted at most intersections to help keep visitors on track. Eagles circled overhead, and we learned that deer and cougar also enjoy the trails, with a very close encounter with the latter recently reported.
