After our hike up Goat Peak on Saturday, Kris and I bagged an unplanned bonus summit on Sunday very close to Winthrop. We weren’t into anything too adventurous, so a little hike at the edge of town had some real appeal. The gain was 1,000 feet, but a good bit of the trail grade wasn’t much steeper than a bowling alley.
The trail is relatively new and is a popular local stroll and bike ride. The slopes were desert scrub, grass and mostly spent wildflowers, so the views were continuous, including a view of some darkening clouds and rain showers to the south. But the sun won out and our five-mile loop to the top and down remained uneventful, though we did pick up the pace a little just in case.
