Most trail geeks in northwest Washington know about the wealth of hiking and biking opps around Anacortes (more on that later). The town itself is well worth just hanging out, exploring, slurping chowder, browsing books, boats, whatever. But if a hike is on the list, be sure to check out the hemispheric views at Sharpe Park. It’s easy to find on Rosario Road about six miles south of town. Or a bit under two miles north of SR 20.
There’s a good trail sign at the parking area. For the best view, take any trail to wide-open Sares Head, less than a mile away. Or for the bigger workout, engineer a loop to Porpoise Point. Expect good tread with some lumpy ups and downs wherever you go.
The views out to the Strait of Juan de Fuca are pretty amazing. Hard to believe, but Port Angeles is just forty miles away across open water to the southwest. Due west is Lopez Island, six miles away. To make a day of it, maybe combine Sharpe Park with a hike or drive up Mount Erie nearby.
