With two to four feet of mountain snow in the forecast for the next three days, winter appears poised to arrive with a punch. However, it’s been a pleasant fall, so no complaints. We need the snowpack—as do our receding glaciers. As do snow bunnies. And wolverines, for that matter. Yay snow!
As you dig out your mittens and mukluks, and locate those little round-thingies that go on the ends of your trekking poles, know that the choices for snowfree adventures in winter remain substantial across Whatcom County, or at least among the lower foothills, lowlands and Salish coast. Trails in the Chuckanuts, of course, are right up there on the list. (I’ll dig into snowshoeing options in a future post.)
Happy to say, the current edition of Adventures NW magazine (Winter 2023-24) sums up my own list of nine favorite winter walks and hikes around the region. You can find the story here (or on p. 24 if you happen to have a copy). There’s lots more good stuff in this issue, so do check it out—especially if you count yourself among the snow bunnies or you love whales!
I’ll be posting more winter hikes at Somewhere in the Weeds in the coming weeks.

Won’t be hiking till spring when these cancer drugs wear off. But I’ll be back in the mountains asap.
