I’ve been thinking about heading back up to B.C. soon and did some flashbacking through hikes I posted a couple of years ago to remind myself where I’ve been. (These were all part of my 70 Summits adventure in 2023.) Since I just waded through them all, I thought I’d post a short compendium below for those who might be interested in a brief menu of options up yonder. So here they are in one place for anyone with a hankering. And of course there are many more choices than these.
If you’re tempted, Vancouver Trails is a pretty good source for maps and info on hikes around the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
Happy fall footstering!
Chilliwack Twofer
Two new summits today! And only an hour from home—in Canada. One of the nice things about living near the border is having two countries to choose from when planning your next fun thing. Long backups at the border crossings can be a deterrent, for sure, especially in the summer months, but this time of year that’s not really an issue.
Another B.C. Twofer
Today, Jeannie and I headed back to Canada for two more good hikes: Iron Mountain and Heritage Mountain, both near Mission, B.C. Nothing superhuman getting up them, but both were enjoyable and more scenic than expected. So, success on both accounts, making it five in a row north of the border. And just five more to go, with 25 days to get there.
Saint Mark's Summit
In Italy last year, Kris and I visited St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Or more correctly, we looked at it from the outside while strolling across the beauteous Piazza San Marco at night. This year, meaning two days ago, we visited Marco’s namesake mountain north of Vancouver, BC. I suppose it’s better to say the mountain that members of a local St. Marks…
Sunrise Hill to High Knoll (B.C.)
Sixty-nine down and one to go!! I gotta let that sink in a minute. . .
Dinkey Dog Mountains
Right off, I’ll admit that these two summits, colorfully named Dog Mountain and Dinkey Peak, were not of the hunky-hulky type, so yeah, they were a little easier than most on my list so far. But hey, we had to go to an entirely different country to find them, and with the chance of rain in the forecast, there was great risk we could have been dribbled o…
Atop the Dragon's Back
So the quest concludes. Today, Mitch, Jeannie and Jim joined me for a slushy trek up a little peak near Hope, B.C.—my 70th summit in my 70th year. For those who might not have followed along, I set my sights on climbing 50 new peaks when I was 50, 60 at 60, and now the 70 redux. A month ago, I wasn’t sure I could pull it off this past year. But here we …
